Tamiflu
Tamiflu is the main drug used to treat the current outbreak of Swine Flu. Tamiflu is an antiviral medication that blocks the actions of influenza virus types A and B in your body. It works by stopping and prevention of the flu virus from reproducing.
Tamiflu is used to treat flu symptoms caused by influenza virus in patients who have had symptoms for less than 2 days. Tamiflu may also be given to prevent influenza in people who may be exposed but do not yet have symptoms.
ORLANDO — Dozens of suspected cases of swine flu in Orange County are in the hands of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as Central Florida waits for word if the virus has been confirmed.
Health officials said they should know the results from Orange County at some point this weekend.
At a 3 p.m. Saturday press conference, the Orange County Health Department said it still has not received confirmation on the probable swine flu case in Orange Country.
Officials said the case that was taken to the CDC is from a 14-year-old girl who was visiting from Mexico. Officials said the teen has fully recovered. The teen and her family were voluntarily isolated and she was treated with Tamiflu.Though the case has not yet been confirmed, the Orange County Health Department said it is not taking any chances, saying it has received large shipments of the drug Tamiflu.
The Tamiflu is being stored in locations undisclosed to the public, not only to avoid a mad rush of people trying to get prescriptions, but also to determine which clinics need it the most.
Officials said they are also dealing with concerns of overhype, as the affects tamiflu may not be as strong for swine flu as they are with other cases of influenza.
Swine Flu Confirmed In Florida
Gov. Charlie Crist declared a state public health emergency Friday after two South Florida students tested positive for swine flu:
* Broward County — Girl, 17, at Hallandale High School, Hallandale Beach
* Lee County — Boy, 11, at Spring Creek Elementary, Bonita Springs
The Broward County teen reportedly returned home from a trip to visit family in Mexico more than a week earlier.
She said she started feeling sick during the trip, but did not seek treatment until she arrived back home.
“Monday, I started vomiting, and my cousin took me to the hospital, and they said it was the flu, but it was a possibility I had the swine flu,” the flu victim said. “Everybody started calling me and texting me. They are freaking out. I feel like a freak. I don’t know.”
Hallandale High School was closed Friday as the school was sanitized to make sure it is safe for students.
The announcement Friday added Florida to the growing list of U.S. states with confirmed swine flu outbreaks.
“While we cannot predict the course of this product and how it will affect our state,” said Florida Surgeon General Dr. Ana Viamonte Ros. “We do expect to see more cases over the coming days and weeks. We ask local health care providers to watch for these patients that have sudden onset of high fever and cough or sore throat, especially those who recently traveled to a state or countries already identified as having cases of H1N1.”
Officials said so far, Florida has already received a majority of its shipment of antiviral drugs from the CDC to help treat those affected by swine flu.
